METEOROLOGY OVERVIEW - Putting Energy in Perspective

Ron Smith

A Story of Sun and Earth: The earth only receives 1 two billionth of the sun's energy, yet it's sufficient to warm our planet to sustain life. We'll unveil the secrets behind how the sun produces its energy through nuclear fusion. Since the sun produces gamma rays, x-rays, ultra-violet, infra-red, radio, as well as visible light, we'll look into the nature of electromagnetic energy and the earth's energy balance. After all, the earth must eventually radiate the same amount of energy it receives. That's energy balance, and it ultimately controls our weather and our entire biological environment.

GREEN BUILDING - "Help or Hype"
Monday

Hank Jackson

The course is designed to familiarize participants with the state-of-the-art in sustainable design, current issues and design tools, and likely future developments. This workshop includes a survey of sustainable design practice, including the LEED™ certification process, and will introduce participants to EnergyPlus, the public domain analysis tool that can be used to satisfy the design criteria for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. This course is designed for architects, engineers, residential developers, and large institutional and commercial property owners interested in building a "green building."

TITLE 24 UPDATE
Tuesday

Martyn Dodd

California’s new 2008 Title 24 Energy Efficiency Standards are scheduled to take effect in April, 2009. You can learn how the latest version of the Standards, including envelope, lighting and mechanical requirements will affect building design in your commercial and residential new construction projects. The program will highlight aspects of the Standards that are new for 2008, most of which are aimed at further reducing peak electricity consumption, and incorporating great energy efficiency measures.

BASIC LIGHTING
Wednesday

Greg Sharp

Explore ways to decrease energy consumption and costs in your business facility through the proper selection of incandescent, fluorescent and high-intensity discharge lighting systems. Enhance your understanding of light source technologies and performance characteristics, as well as their appropriate applications. (3.5 AIA HSW Learning Units)
Note: The Introduction to Lighting class offers an excellent learning opportunity for customers with little or no prior lighting knowledge.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE
Thursday

David Wylie

Designed for facilities staff, this seminar covers current energy-efficient technologies used in commercial and industrial facilities, including information on lighting; electric motors and drives; energy management systems; HVAC; and distributed energy resources. Learn how to save money by implementing technology changes.

IMPLEMENTING EE PROJECTS
Friday

David Wylie

Do you suspect that the old equipment in your commercial/industrial facility is using too much energy and perhaps new equipment is worth the investment? On the other hand, why make a change when the old equipment is still running? So, how do you know what to do? This workshop covers how to perform energy assessments, screening audits, feasibility studies and the selection of proper equipment.

2:00p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

SIMPLE HOUSEHOLD TIPS TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Monday

Ted Flanigan

Renewables and energy efficiency are both parts of the energy puzzle. Ted Flanigan will put the pieces together and try to explain the roles of all the players.

SOLAR 201
Tuesday

Ted Flanigan

Solar is a straightforward technology complicated by myth, economics and regulation. Russell will talk about how to make sure solar is part of our future.

WIND 201
Wednesday

ATTE

The California Wind Energy Collaborative (CWEC) in concert with the California Community Colleges Advanced Transportation Technology and Energy (ATTE) program will present an overview program on wind technology.  The presentation will address wind energy technology, the industry status and outlook, growth drivers and issues, employment opportunities, and economic impacts.  Wind energy represents a key component of a renewable energy future for California and is experiencing many improvements in turbine technology for both utility or wind farm scale and small scale applications.

TRANSPORTATION 201
Thursday

TBD

This program will focus on alternative fuel and transportation technology choices from both a fleet manager and consumer perspective.  It will provide and overview of the drivers for and issues concerning the selection of alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles, and efficiency options.
